Neha & Jithin’s Mehndi Highlights

The mehndi ceremony is one of the major celebrations before the start of an Indian wedding celebration.  Tradition states that the darker the mehndi, the more the bride’s future husband will love her (and how nice her future mother-in-law will be to their marriage)!  Well, if the amount of friends, family, and laughter in the bride’s family home the night of the mehndi ceremony contributes to the amount of Neha’s future love, it will be bountiful!

Decked out in fiery colors, Neha began her mehndi application around 1:45pm the thursday before her wedding.  The bride’s mehndi can take many hours to do because she has her hands, arms, feet, and legs covered in intricate designs.  It is tradition to hide the groom’s name among the designs of the mehndi so the groom must hunt for it during the wedding celebrations.  Neha knew Jithin would easily find it, so she had the henna artist hide the initials to his name through the entire design!  Neha sat still until 8:00pm for the artist to finish the intricate mehndi designs on her arms and feet.  I could not find a definitive answer to why, but the mehndi designs are applied to the bride’s feet and hands and, I believe, as long as it appears there, she does not have to do any house chores!  I wonder how true this played out?  To help this tradition guests help apply lemon juice to the designs to help darken the color of it.

Neha and Jithin’s mehndi guests gathered to eat, laugh, have their own mehndi applied, and tell stories to the future newly weds. Neha and Jithin’s friends and family prepared a wonderful skit that acted out their relationship from past to present.  A dance floor was in place to dance late into the night once the mehndi was complete.  Along with having the mehndi applied the bride is adorned with gifts along with being given new outfits and jewelry to take with her to her new home.

Please enjoy some of the highlights from Neha and Jithin’s Mehndi Ceremony.  It was a very enjoyable night!
